David Wharton participated in football, basketball and track while
at Fort Pierre High School from 1959-63. As a senior, Fort Pierre
was Little Central Athletic Conference champions in football,
basketball and track. David earned all-conference and all-state
honors.
In basketball, David was a three year starter, leading his team in
assists all three years. As a senior, David led the Buffalos to a
22-3 record and the district championship, as well as the conference
championship. In football, David played a key role in the Buffalos
conference championship his senior year, starting at both
quarterback and safety. He was the second leading scorer and was
named All-State Honorable Mention as a quarterback. In track, David
continued his athletic excellence, helping the Buffalos to yet
another conference championship. He was a hurdler, sprinter, long
jumper and high jumper. As a senior, David finished second in the
intra-squad decathlon and won the 180 yard low hurdle conference
championship. In the process, he set a new school record.
David was a well-rounded student and excelled in other areas besides
the field, court and track. He was the Homecoming King, a class
officer, a student council representative, Boy’s State
Representative, Student Rotarian, was active in journalism, yearbook
and drama as well as serving as President of the Lettermen’s Club
his senior year. David was a true renaissance man.
After high school, David attended Yankton College (1963-65) before
graduating from Black Hills State College (1965-67). He was a
varsity letter winner at both schools. After graduation, David
taught and coached football, basketball and track at Kennebec High
School (1967-1969) then taught and coached basketball and track at
Ripton High School in Ripton, California (1969-2006). David and his
wife have three sons and are retired in California.
