Kenny Diegel - 2015 Hall of Fame |
Kenny Diegel
is known to a generation of Buffalo athletes as the greatest fan
ever. He faithfully attended Stanley County games for many years and
knew everyone on the field and in the bleachers. Because of his
light-hearted and caring personality, Kenny had many friends in the
Fort Pierre area. Kenny liked all sports but was most interested
when the Buffalos or Lady Buffalos were competing. Whether it was
football, wrestling, volleyball, girl’s basketball, gymnastics or
boy’s basketball, Kenny was there cheering on the Buffs. He not only
cheered for the varsity teams but also showed up for junior varsity
contests as well. That way, he knew everybody who was playing. If
Kenny was unable to attend an away game, he would have his ear glued
to the radio, cheering as if he were there. Win or lose, Kenny
always greeted the student-athletes after the games with a smile on
his face. He was particularly excited in 1990 and 1998 when head
football coach Dave Tate personally presented him tickets to the
championship game in Vermillion. Kenny never stepped foot on the
field or the court as a player but he nevertheless nurtured an
entire generation with his support and love. It did not matter to
him if the Buffalos were good or bad, Kenny was going to be there to
cheer for the school and the athletes that he had grown to love.
Kenny loved the Stanley County Buffalos like nothing else. He passed
away in 2006 but will always be remembered as the Buffalo Super Fan. |
