School Board Meeting
June 29, 2000

 

The Stanley County School District, #57-1, Board of Education met in special session June 29, 2000, 5:30 P.M., in the study hall of the high school building with Steve Brown, David Carlisle, Peggy Tibbs, Arlene Poncelet and Charlene Foster present. Others in attendance were Superintendent Jerry Kleinsasser, Business Manager Kevin Merscheim and Principals Tony Glass and Denise Gebur. Visitors included Gary Johnson, Mary Beth Fravel, Wes Hiller, Sara Hagen, Shirley Swanson and Lyman Chase.

The meeting was called to order by President Steve Brown at 5:30 P.M.

Carlisle moved, seconded by Tibbs, to adopt the agenda as amended. All voted aye.

Carlisle moved, seconded by Poncelet, to approve the regular bills. All voted aye.

Foster moved, seconded by Poncelet, to accept the resignation of Amy Iversen with regrets. Poncelet, Brown, Foster and Tibbs voted aye. Carlisle voted no.

Wes Hiller of Hiller Investigations and Security Systems reported the equipment that was included in the quotation of security equipment for the computer labs. Security camera’s will be used to video tape any activity in the classrooms. The cost of the proposal was $18,885.00 with half of the cost to be paid by the Stanley County Schools and half paid by the South Dakota School District Benefits Fund that currently insures the school for property and liability insurance.

Carlisle moved, seconded by Foster, to approve the quotation from Hiller Investigations and Security Systems and also the agreement with the South Dakota School District Benefits Fund. All voted aye.

President Steve Brown declared the Board in recess at 5:50 P.M. for the purpose of a public hearing on the proposed 2000-2001 fiscal year budget.

Business Manager Kevin Merscheim detailed the published 2000-2001 fiscal year budget. A detailed listing was presented showing the increases and decreases in the budget.

President Steve Brown declared the Board back in session at 5:58 P.M.

Principal Denise Gebur proposed changes to the elementary handbooks and briefly explained the Boys Town Model. Principal Tony Glass proposed amendments to the middle and high school handbooks. Superintendent Jerry Kleinsasser and Business Manager Kevin Merscheim presented the amendments to the school board policy handbook for the 2000-2001 school year. The Board will review the proposals and adopt the changes in July.

Business Manager Kevin Merscheim presented quotations for the repair of the roof on the Elementary Building. The quotations received were as follows:

Repair a portion of the roof:
Chase Roofing $9,010.00 15-year warranty
Weather All Roofing $5,710.00 10-year warranty

Repair the entire roof:
Chase Roofing $11,638.00 15-year warranty
Weather All Roofing $10,835.00 10- year warranty

Foster moved, seconded by Carlisle, to accept the quotation for repair of the entire roof from Chase Roofing in the amount of $11,638.00 because of the fifteen-year warranty. All voted aye.

The Board canvassed the results of the 2000 School Board Election, which was held in conjunction with the Stanley County General Election on June 6, 2000. The results of the election are as follows:

Gary Johnson - 447 votes
Pat Durkin - 342 votes
John Bucholz - 367 votes

Carlisle moved, seconded by Foster, to publish salaries for the 2000-2001 school year. All voted aye.
