The
Stanley County School District, #57-1, Board of Education met in
regular session March 11, 2002, 5:30 P.M., in the high school
study hall with Charlene Foster, Gary Johnson, Mary Beth Fravel,
John Bucholz and Mitch Norman present.
Others in attendance were Superintendent Larry Jaske,
Business Manager Kevin Merscheim and Principal Merry Bleeker.
Visitors were Mary Askren, Shirley Swanson, John Moisan,
Arlene Krueger, Jeff Monroe, Craig Rutschke, Brian Doherty,
Lawrence and Carol Olson.
The
meeting was called to order by President Charlene Foster at 5:30
P.M.

Ellenbecker was thanked for her many years of service to the
Stanley County School District as an expert teacher.
John
Moisan, representing the Stanley County Parent Organization,
reported a meeting was held on March 10.
Superintendent Larry Jaske was present to explain the
finances of the Stanley County School District for the 2002-2003
school year.
Representative
Jeff Monroe discussed legislation that was passed during session
as it pertains to educational issues.
Items discussed were educational funding and teacher
mentoring.
Superintendent
Larry Jaske proposed a draft of an agreement for the lease of a
building for the gymnastics program next year.
Gymnastic head coach Nicki Abels will be present at the
April meeting to discuss this proposal with the Board.
Principal
Merry Bleeker reported the fourth and fifth grade students had a
presentation on March 11 from Mr. Mel Thorne, recipient of the
Governors Award for Excellence in South Dakota History
Preservation. It was announced that Jacey Miles won the Young
Illustrators Award for the state in his division.
Jean Patrick of Mitchell will make a presentation on
March 20 to students in grades kindergarten through the fifth
grade about writing in general and specifically how she came to
write and publish her stories.
The March staff development inservice included the
curriculum review plan. The
recommendations will be presented at the April Board meeting.
March 22 is the end of the third-quarter, and March 25
and 26 will be parent teacher conferences.
The school carnival is March 22 at Parkview.
Superintendent
Larry Jaske reported in the absence of Kevin Mutchelknaus that
Jon Big Crow, Tyler Coverdale, Sheila Ricketts and Danyielle
Clark were awarded the students of the month for February.
The DACs testing for grades six and ten will be on
April 3 and 5, 2002. The
SAT tests will be given on April 4, 2002.
Parent teacher conferences will be March 25 and 26 from 4
P.M. to 7:30 P.M. School
carnival activities are being planned and will be set for the
big event on March 22, 2002.
Superintendent
Larry Jaske and Athletic Director and Cheerleader Advisor Carol
Olson explained the proposed changes to the cheer team
guidelines and policies.

moved, seconded by Bucholz, to approve the cheer team guidelines
and policies as amended. All

Larry Jaske again presented the school bullying and
victimization policy for board consideration without any
amendments.

Superintendent
Larry Jaske proposed an amended staff survey questionnaire for
the superintendent evaluation form used annually.
The Board approved this amendment.

Larry Jaske proposed purchasing forty additional band uniforms
for the 2002-2003 school year with the expense to be included in
the Capital Outlay. The
Music Boosters will be donating $5,000 towards the purchase of
the uniforms.
Superintendent
Larry Jaske proposed purchasing a used suburban or a Yukon to
replace the school vans.
Norman
moved, seconded by Bucholz, to authorize the superintendent to
advertise and collect bids for the purchase of a used vehicle to
replace the school vans. All
voted aye.
Board
members John Bucholz and Charlene Foster were appointed by the
Board along with Superintendent Larry to review all board
policies. The first meeting is scheduled for March 27 at 8 A.M.
Board
members Mary Beth Fravel and Mitch Norman were appointed by the
Board to represent the school at the Stanley County Board of
Equalization meetings.
Superintendent
Larry Jaske reported that impact aid funds were not cut at the
federal level but will be frozen at the current levels.
The base appropriation for the Stanley County Schools
will be $181,653.00. The
estimated 2002-2003 fiscal year budget was reviewed along with
the moving of certain expenditures to the Capital Outlay fund
and Special Education funds.
The pension fund, which can be used for the cost of
retirement benefits, will be proposed for next years budget.
Superintendent
Larry Jaske recommended an additional golf coach because of
fifty students who will be participating this year.

moved, seconded by Norman, to approve the contract for Brian
Doherty as the assistant golf coach as proposed.

Larry Jaske informed the Board of the Associated School Boards
Legislative Meeting at the Ramkota on March 19 at 6 P.M.

moved, seconded by Bucholz, to go into Executive Session
according to SDCL 1-25-2 for personnel reasons at 7:05 P.M.
