The Stanley County
School District, #57-1, Board of Education met in special
session January 23, 2007, 5:30 P.M., in the middle school
learning center with Sonny Harrowa, Darby Nutter, Bridget
Miller, Mork Norman and John Duffy present. Others in attendance
were Superintendent Brad Caldwell and Business Manager Kevin
Merscheim. Visitors included Travis Gulbrandson, Sam Tidball,
David Carlisle, Jim Klemann, Craig & Tanya Heller, Blair
Krueger, Greg Swanson, Julie Jeffries, Jim Geuther, Rod Stoeser,
Kari Gabriel, Dan & Jeannell Scott and South Dakota Department
of Transportation Officials.
President Sonny Harrowa called the meeting to order at 5:30 P.M.
President Sonny Harrowa led the pledge of allegiance.
Loren Schaffer representing the South Dakota Department of
Transportation presented information on the proposed SD Highway
83 project through Fort Pierre. The project is scheduled to
start this spring. The details of the construction near the
Stanley County School District’s property were presented along
with the national standards that must be followed. The Board and
the public in attendance proposed the project be changed to meet
safety issues for children attending school. Issues such as
crosswalks, stop lights, caution lights, crossing guards,
barriers and other items were discussed. The need for a
five-lane versus three-lane highway was discussed by the public
with the Department of Transportation. Moving the Parkview
entrance to the north side of the building was also discussed.
The officials from the Department of Transportation will be
investigating some of the suggestions and will get information
to the Board in the near future.
Nutter moved, seconded by Duffy, to adjourn at 7:42 P.M. All
voted aye.
